Saint Nicholas/Saint Mary School, home of the Crescents!
Saint Nicholas/St. Mary School offers opportunities for students to compete in interscholastic athletics at a level that is appropriate to their skill, experience, and age. Through participation on a team, it is hoped that our students learn the values of cooperation, sportsmanship, responsibility, and loyalty. Not only will children learn these values, but by participating in sports, a child will develop his/her physical self. We see athletics as an extension of the classroom and our coaches as teachers, helping to educate our students’ physical selves. As a Catholic School, we value fair play, winning modestly, losing with dignity, and helping our opponents when they fall.
We also see sports as a motivator for hard work in the classroom. A student can not participate in our athletic programs unless they are earning satisfactory grades in all of their classes.
Basketball
Our Crescent basketball program begins at 3rd grade. Our 3rd and 4th-grade boys and girls play in the Holy Redeemer System Developmental Basketball League, hosted here at Saint Nicholas/St. Mary School. Our 5th and 6th-grade boys and girls continue to hone their skills in the Good Shepherd Academy Basketball League. Our JV and Varsity teams participate in the Lackawanna County/Luzerne County Catholic Basketball League (LC/LC Catholic League). All diocesan elementary schools in Lackawanna and Luzerne County participate in this highly competitive league.
Cheerleading
Girls in 5th through 8th grade are able to participate in our cheerleading program. Cheerleaders cheer at all of our varsity boys’ basketball home games throughout the basketball season.
Cross-Country
Our Cross-Country program runs in the spring, and we partner with two other Catholic schools (St. Jude and Good Shepherd) to form “Wyoming Valley Catholic.” Students in grades 5 through 8 are able to participate. We run against another Catholic school in the Catholic Cross Country League. 5th and 6th graders run in the JV race and 7th and 8th graders run in the Varsity race.
Holy Redeemer HS Junior High Sports
St. Nicholas-St. Mary School is a feeder school to Holy Redeemer High School. As a feeder, our 7th and 8th-grade students are able to play for various HRHS junior high sports, which fall under the auspices of the PIAA. These athletic opportunities include football, golf, soccer (coed), and field hockey in the fall. In the spring, students may participate on our junior high baseball, softball, or track and field teams.
